Ash

i.

year upon year
each season takes a nap
within its cradle of branches

before rolling on,
relentless over Whale Hill
without as much as a backward glance

at the old codger standing
stoic at the edge of the wood
that was once the middle of a forest,

or there abouts,
bare bucked and dull or crowned
and fulsome, keeper of greensongs,

draping its shadow
across fields of moor grass
long stalks, purpling, wound-splashed

by papery poppy heads;
pointing, depending on the sun’s
position, at the town creeping closer,

the church spire,
the flyover, the spanky-new
leisure centre by the tithe barn

ii.

honey bees thread
wavering flights to and from
the puckered cranny in its upper trunk,

among higher twigs
a squirrel has built a drey
among drooping gloves of samaras

readying for their fall
to nestle between root hairs
that dig blindly, homing the underloam

sipping on moisture from storm-waters,
snowmelts that have seeped
through the topsoil

of sand, silt, clay, worms, dormant
insects, seed-clocks counting
the turn of the Earth -

once a body’s weight swung from a rope
looped round the lowest fork,
a moon-face pendulum,

one eyed death-head, orbiting ever inward
with each creak of cord to steal
the secrets of endlessness,

memory and thought swoop in at dusk,
stalking hoof-printed mud beneath
his compass feet, flutter up

to his shoulders, rattle the day’s scavenged
crumbs into fungal lugs until he’s
learned the trick of returning.
