about
Part 1 of the saga of The Shrouded Republic, inspired by the legend of Reverend Robert Kirk of Aberfoyle, author of 'The Secret Commonwealth: A Study in Folklore and Psychical Research', 1691, who was allegedly abducted by the fairy folk of Doon Hill as punishment for revealing their mysteries.
lyrics
The Shrouded Republic
i)
Lichting the canle, he feels hi’self mair
animal than human, though
when any dumb craiture oer came
its instinctual scare to set flame
tae blacked wick he cannae say,
he holds his doubts,
but his eens are oolet-bricht
as he keeks the room, strigine heid
swivelling to note they’re still alane.
Naething amiss, nowtte oot o’ steid.
His good wife fast akip
Bible at the bedside
clothes folded tydie on the cheir,
the beinns sleeping heavy
Loch Ard gulping stars
the gravestones in the kirkyard
basking in cawld moonglow.
Nowtte amiss, nor oot o’ steid,
but the voyce that roused him
still rings in the wheest neuks
a whistling rine o’ tirlings
throogh sub-couth geometries -
mousewabs inside his scull:
a fogg, a fugue, a howe
a furrow oer the fell where he fingered
the frangere of Feen and Niflung.
Whit wis he dwaaming?
That auld one o’ fire, crackling sticks
the Presbytar's persuasion,
a poor crone's shrieks, her mouth
a sink-hole, the fervour of the crowd.
